DT has been sending this one quite a lot as a sample whenever I order! I have made this twice now and I can never seem to get the flavour right. I think I would like it more if it was peach heavy, but I think this tea is a bit too finicky for me. It can get bitter really fast.

I mostly taste the white tea with a hint of floral and peach notes. It was okay, but not something I would purchase.

I agree, this one is quite finicky. :(

Wow! I am beyond impressed with this tea. This tea is from a small business in Toronto, which I discovered through the Toronto Tea Festival’s Instagram page. To be honest, most of the prepared chai blends I have tried have been from David’s Tea or chai-inspired blends. These were also delicious!!! :)

However, I have been on the search for something truly authentic. For me, as somebody who is South Asian, this would entail finding a masala chai blend that replicates what I would find in my grandmother’s kitchen, and I think I found it! :) Please consider supporting this small Canadian tea company if you can!

Smell: Strong, fragrant, pungent masala chai spices. When I looked at the blend, all the spices were ground, not whole. This is how my grandma usually made chai since grounding the spices lets the flavours shine.

Preparation: I made this one stove-top style with water, sugar, and milk!

Taste: This stole the show for me! It really tastes like an authentic masala chai. That is my only way of putting it. All the flavours are well-balanced. The notes I get the most are the ginger, cardamon, and fennel. The other notes are there too, but they are more so in the background. I really enjoyed this! It also has a very warming feeling that I expect from my masala chais; perfect for the winter.

Overall, a great tea blend, and the owners of this small business are lovely. Answered all my questions promptly! If you love chai, I would highly recommend this blend.

I had such high hopes for this blend! It sounded like everything I would love! :) A roasted, caramel inspired tea blend – yes, please!

And even after trying it and steeping it using different methods, I still dislike it.

It tastes very… fake and artificial. And it has a weird, artificially sweet apple flavour to it. I am not getting the roasted marshmallow flavour others have mentioned (which I so wanted to get!). I get hints of the yummy Hojicha taste, but the strange artificial apple taste makes this unpalatable to me.

Overall, I will not be repurchasing this. But I hope others enjoy it more than I did!

I made this as a latte. I put 4 perfect spoons of this blend to make a super concentrated tea and frothed up some milk to pour on top of it. I think with the milk it tastes better because it subdues the saltiness and caramel notes of this blend. It makes it into a creamy, slightly salty, oolong latte. However, I do not think I will repurchase this tea again due to its strong artificial taste.

I often have trouble with caramel-flavored things tasting artificial, too. :(

I feel like I often get intrigued by David’s blends, then see the artificial flavouring in the ingredients and steer clear. There are so many teas with natural flavouring that do such a great job instead. It’s such a shame though!

Silent Kettle

Yes! I can 100% relate to this. I am not sure if DT has changed, but I remember before, their teas did not taste as fake/artificial or loaded with stevia. They were pleasant and natural tasting despite being creative blends. But they do still have some good blends!

I agree; I think I get wrapped up in the allure of DT, but every time I have tried most of their teas, I have been left unsatisfied.

Silent Kettle

I think I prefer when tea companies just use brown sugar etc. to mimic the taste of caramel instead. It makes it a more enjoyable experience.

I’m the same way with DT, I generally only order teaware from them now. There have been some in the past that I’ve enjoyed, but most have been disappointing for me. But the new ones do sound good! :P

Silent Kettle

Yes! I want to get their nordic mugs (since I haven’t been able to locate a 16 oz mug anywhere, lol!) But this will probably be my last tea order. And I will look at your reviews to see how you felt about their new releases!

I was so excited to get this tea! Since I love smokey flavours. I would not say this is as smokey as a lapsang souchong. Instead, it has a more roasted, warm flavour. It melds nicely with the artificial, caramel, apple notes. It was quite nice, but I am not sure if I will repurchase it. I think I need to try this as a latte instead.

I also think because I have been trying more straight teas/natural blends, I might just be more sensitive to artificial flavours. But this tea tasted a bit artificial to me, I guess! But I look forward to experimenting with it more.

I was so excited to get this tea! To be honest, I’m not sure if I made it properly since the caramel pieces wouldn’t melt when I pulled out the infuser. If anybody has any advice on how I can cause the caramel pieces to melt – that would be great! And I used boiling water for this too. Maybe I should use a lower temperature next time?

This smells lovely. Like a strong, predominantly sugary and caramel note. I also shook the bag to disperse the salt evenly.

Taste: This tea tastes really salty, and less sweet. And it is not like a coarse sea salt, but like a table salt flavour. It reminds me of when I sprinkled some table salt into my caramel tea to mimic a salted caramel flavour. I also got a hint of oolong.

But this tea feels like it is all aroma, but no taste. I added a heaping tablespoon of honey to this, which helped amplified the caramel note and also complemented the salty elements of this tea. I think this is a bit too salty for me, but I will try finishing it off slowly I guess.

This tea has a strong alcohol, artificial note as I keep trying it more… maybe I need to steep it less? I will try making it again soon.

Mmm, having this now with some sugar and coconut-almond milk. It is a very good tea blend where all the flavours come through. You can taste the spice for sure and a slight hint of chocolate on the backend. I think this makes an excellent latte if you are looking for something special that you might not have tried before.

Flavors: Chocolate, Spicy

Courtney

It sounds tasty, especially in the almond coconut milk.

Silent Kettle

Yes! I liked it – especially with some milk, it really elevates the creaminess and subdues the spiciness. But I rated it high because it truly lives up to its namesake.

First, I love the Tea Haus. What a lovely small business and they have the most incredible customer service. :)

I tried the Kyoto Cherry Rose Organic again cold steeped today, and it brought out a perfume-y note, which I guess is from the rose. However, after I added some sugar, it subdued the note a bit.

Either way, I think I need to experiment with this tea more to make a firm consensus on it.

Hello everyone!

So, how did I get into tea? I think I have always had a fascination with tea. But I really got obsessed with it after watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. I loved how Uncle Iroh used tea as a way to both practice self-care and connect with others.

I aspire to do the same through my tea endeavours.

My Favourite Canadian Small Tea Businesses: (Thus far! As I explore new tea brands, I am sure this list will grow)

Dessert by Deb
The Tea Haus
The Chai Brewing Company

My Preferred Preparation:
For black teas, I prefer the stove-top method with milk and sugar. For all other teas and herbal infusions, I usually prefer having them hot without any add-ins. However, I do like an occasional iced tea! Especially for some fruity or floral blends.

My Tea Preferences:
I enjoy flavoured teas more than straight teas; however, I do have a soft spot for traditional green or oolong teas.

Favourite Flavours:
- Masala chai (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and other warming spices!)
- Cream
- Mint
- Tropical fruit (lychee, mango, pineapple)
- Maple
- Orange
- Roasted/smokey
- Caramel
- Floral (especially jasmine)
- Honey
- Nuts (hazelnut, almond)
- Sweet potato
- Fall fruits (apples, cranberries)
- Earl Grey
- Vanilla bean

Least Liked Flavours:
- Anything that tastes too artificial (especially vanilla or chocolate!)

- Tart (too much hibiscus)

- Ginseng

- Guarana powder

- Coconut oil (or oily teas)

- Red rooibos
