From 52teas

This is one of the big fan favorites!

Here’s the original description:

“Have you ever stopped to enjoy the cool quiet of an old cemetery on a fall evening? Ever stayed to watch the evening mist roll in? Maybe stayed overnight on a dare and found yourself waking in the wet grass to the vision of sunlight slipping through the vanishing mist?

Me either, but that’s kind of what this tea reminds me of.

Part Chinese sencha, part Yun Wu (Cloud Mist), with marshmallow root, spearmint and natural marshmallow, spearmint and a hint of malt flavors, this is a smooth, silky experience with the sweet pique of spearmint subdued and made ghost-like—subtle, but haunting."

Since this is one of those long-time faves. we didn’t want to alter it, so we stuck to the recipe.

Ingredients: Organic Chinese green teas, organic marshmallow root, organic dried spearmint leaves, all-natural organic flavors.

This kept me company today while I read The Perks Of Being A Wallflower for the first time. Oversteeped the second infusion but that’s alright since the story was so overwhelming that the powerful taste seemed almost appropriate.

(Ok, I’m being dramatic but WOW, what a book.)

This is one of those teas I didn’t know if I wanted to buy or not. I’m not a huge fan of mint, but the combination of marshmallow root and malt sounded quite good. If the mint could be masked, I actually might enjoy it! This tea reminds me of those conversation hearts that are available around Valentine’s Day — the minty ones. Sipping… I’m surprised that the mint isn’t super strong. I don’t taste a bunch of the marshmallow root, sadly. It ends with a very abrupt, sharp and almost bitter note. This tea is on the verge of tasting like toothpaste or mouthwash or gum.. but it’s not as MINT! as I thought it as going to be — so good news! Very happy that I was able to sample this (thanks to the traveling tea box) and not have to buy a full pouch.

Backlog:

I really wanted to love this tea because of the name. My husband loves it. To me, it’s another novelty flavor that hardly tastes like tea at all. It’s fun and pleasant to drink, but my cravings are usually aimed towards tea (and flavored teas so long as the tea isn’t lost to the flavors).

This tea tastes like a melted stick of chewing gum. The marshmallow gives it that gummy-like texture. Unlike the 52teas Lime Jello Salad tea, I could see myself drinking this tea again, but not too often.

Tea #3 from Another Traveling Tea Box

I would definitely buy this if Frank ever decides to reblend it. The flavors are all very well balanced. The sip starts with marshmallow and has a malty finish. The mint did not overpower the flavors at all. I LOVE the marshmallow. It adds so much sweetness with a bit of creaminess.

The second steep lacked the malt notes and the marshmallow mellowed out a bit. The flavor was a lot more like a creamy, minty green tea.

Fiddling

I could have sworn that this wasn’t in stock when I checked earlier this week, but I’m glad I was wrong! Thanks for the link.

So it finally happened.. The one thing I have been dreading this entire 12 Teas of Christmas experience… a mint tea has appeared. I was so disappointed when I opened this. I am allergic to mint :(

So I gave it to my BF who drank it iced and here’s what he had to say:

“Too much spearmint. Needs chocolate. It’s ok.. 3 stars out of 5”

Sorry I couldn’t drag any more words out of him about this tea. I’m also sorry about the low rating because I’m sure this is a great tea (as all of the other ones have been so far). I’m just going to rate it off of his ‘3 stars’ comment.

I decided to cold brew some of this in the fridge and I think it was the right choice! It has been in there for days and I have been sipping on it periodically to see how it was doing. A couple times it needed a little more sugar to even out the bitter tinge that goes with spearmint being overpowering, but I think I have almost got it down now. The spearmint is still a little over the top and if I was patient enough to let the ice melt, it just might be a perfect cup. But I am not patient. The marshmallow root ads a slight creamy vanilla like flavor that rounds out the mint nicely. I can see going through the whole bag of this iced over the summer! I must pace myself!

Another of my older 52 Teas blends. I liked this one as soon as I tried it in the 12 Teas of Christmas sampler a few years back, and I had to take the opportunity to pick up a pouch of the reblend. Just to clarify, this is a “Frank” reblend, rather than the current “Anne” version.

I like this one mostly because it uses spearmint, which is woefully underrepresented in both green and herbal teas, and in the mint tea world generally. As someone who prefers spearmint to peppermint, that makes me sad. It’s even better here because it’s paired with marshmallow, which is another flavour I enjoy in tea. I never used to be much of a green tea fan, but this was one of the blends that originally helped to change my mind.

This reblend is pretty true to form. It’s quite strongly minty, with the sweet yet still refreshing and cooling spearmint front and centre. After the initial hit of mint comes the more delicate sweetness of the marshmallow root. It adds a deliciously desserty vibe, and contributes another layer of sweetness. Underlying both is the green tea, but it’s barely there and adds just a hint of grassy vegetal flavour. I love the name of this one. It’s very evocative, and it sort of does seem fitting in terms of the flavours. I can just imagine the coolness and the scent of the grass and the trees, with a hint of mist in the air…Very atmospheric!

I was prepared for this reblend to not quite meet my expectations, but in actual fact I’m not at all disappointed. It’s still a great blend, even after all this time. One of my favourite flavoured green teas!

So, it appears that I’ve rated this tea but have never written a note for it. Whoops. I shall remedy that right now!

I basically just rediscovered my pouch of this when trying to clear out space in my teabox (really more of a large storage bin). Based on my memory and its description, I thought it’d be the perfect tea to accompany me as I did some of my homework readings.

This tea seems to have held up quite well considering it’s been hidden away for several months. The marshmallow aroma is still apparent, and pairs very nicely with the spearmint to create a soothing flavour and sensation. The green tea lingers in the background, like a good soundtrack to a film— you know it’s there if you pay attention to it, but otherwise it blends in seamlessly with the rest of the movie that you barely notice it.

All in all, a lovely cup that will definitely continue to accompany me in my late-night readings until I run out.

I love green tea. I have at least two cups of it a day. With that being said this is a really good one. I love the green tea blends that Frank comes up with they are always so good. With this tea it is no exception it is really good. I love the combination of the marshmallow root and mint it tastes so good together. I love that the mint is not overpowering. It is the right amount of mint and the right amount of sweet. Love it!
