Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge – “A pineapple tea”

So I placed an order from 52teas the other day. I don’t remember what led me to look at the website, I think maybe I wanted to try Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha again, even though I’ve always been a bit underwhelmed by it given the hype. But I’ve had the same reaction to similar marshmallow treat-type blends from other tea companies, so there you are. Anyway! I ended up ordering something like 16 samplers because everything sounded amazing… Sipdown, what’s that? XD

This was one of five teas that I got in a mystery grab bag. I love pineapple, so I thought it sounded super interesting, plus there’s a pineapple prompt in Mastress Alita’s July sipdown challenge! Perfect! The pineapple aroma when I opened the pouch was absolutely intoxicating.

The taste is very interesting. I’m not sure if it’s the base tea or the combination of flavors, but something here is really reminding me of rye bread. Needless to say, it’s a bit odd when combined with the pineapple and chocolate. And neither of my fellow reviewers mentioned anything close to rye, so I feel like I might just be crazy ha ha… Sometimes Fujian black teas have a bit of a caraway vibe, but I don’t see any in the base here.

I do taste both pineapple, which is very juicy and sweet, perhaps a tiny bit leaning toward the Haribo side of things, and a fairly creamy-tasting chocolate. Is it the combination of the two that’s giving me this decidedly grainy note? No idea! Regardless, a very interesting tea. I’m honestly a bit flummoxed at how to rate this one…

Flavors: Bread, Candy, Caraway, Chocolate, Creamy, Pineapple, Rye, Savory, Sweet, Wheat

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

I love the mystery grab bags! I never order them anymore now that I have the subscription, but they were always so exciting!

Yes, such a good deal! And all the teas I got sound yummy, AND there was only one duplicate even though I also ordered about a dozen sampler pouches. Thanks Anne! :D

The grab bags were pre-designated, so when you had ordered one that was already in the grab bag, I couldn’t really change it since I had already made all the adjustments to inventory – and to change it would have meant readjustments. I’ve found that whenever I go in and readjust inventory like that is when errors occur in my inventory. But hopefully, you’ll enjoy the one that was duped by your order (it’s really, really good iced) so it won’t matter much that you received the duplicate. :)

No worries Anne, I was impressed that there was only one duplicate since I ordered so many teas ha ha. And the Ginger Cola is super yummy! :D

Hi, I’m Cameron!

I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, Korean skincare, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

~ 2025 SIPDOWN CHALLENGE! ~
- February sipdowns: 5
- Total 2025 sipdowns: 39

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia (or monkfruit, etc.).

I tend to reach for fruitier flavors rather than desserty ones these days, but I do have favorites from both categories. Willing to try anything once! There are a few ingredients/flavors that aren’t generally my jam, such as coconut, rose, lavender, and chocolate flavoring. But I also have teas that I love with some of those things, too! :)

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
