Huang Zhi Xiang Phoenix Mountain Oolong is a famous varietal of oolong grown on Phoenix Mountain in Guangzhou, China. Phoenix mountain is a high elevation (1000m+ above sea level) mountain that spends most of the year covered in mist. Old growth tea trees thrive in these conditions, producing some of the most complex and beautiful tea available! Huang Zhi Xiang translates to Orange Blossom Fragrance, and carries subtle notes of citrus fruit and wildflowers. Our Huang Zhi Xiang is light and crisp with an intense tangerine and blood orange aroma. The flavor is smooth and sweet with thick honey and sandalwood notes, a light mineral aftertaste and lingering floral qualities. Pine notes are noticable in later infusions as well as a light peppercorn spice.

Phoenix Mountain Oolongs are generally very difficult to brew. Because of this, we have spent around six months working out the proper brewing instructions to make the perfect cup of this citrusy and complex oolong everytime! You can enjoy at least seven cups of Huang Zhi Xiang per tablespoon of tea leaves. If you can’t handle that much tea, I would highly suggest going to the 4th infusion, which is my personal favorite!

Brewing Directions: Steep 1 tablespoon (3g) of leaves in 8 ounces of 190ºF water for 1 minute.
2nd infusion: 1 minute and 30 seconds.
3rd infusion: 2 minutes.
4th infusion: 3 minutes.
5th infusion: 4 minutes.
6th infusion: 6 minutes.
7th infusion: 9 minutes.

Oh my, this tea…

Ok, I have to admit: this is hands down one of the best friggin Dancong I have had to date.

It’s all citrus essential oils. Orange and clementine’s breeze, rounded by a roasted nutty cashew creaminess.

There’s a peppery finish, the way a good olive oil can be. I also get cilantro notes.

(Ok, note to self: make an orange, cashew, cilantro olive oil salad and drink this tea next time)

The citrus lingers forever and ever. Amen. Get this.

In other news, it’s that time of year here when tons of dragonflies gather above my rooftop, forming a big cloud. There’s literarily hundreds of them. It’s quite a phenomenon. They are so beautiful and whimsical. Iridescent blues and greens…just stunning.

This will last for about a week, every evening just before it gets dark.

You’ll guess, I have a thing for dragonflies. There’s just a mystic aura about them, so intriguing and fascinating.

I’m not superstitious, but I’d like to think they bring good luck. If not, at least I know for sure they bring me joy and happiness, just like this tea does :-)

I remember the first time I made this…I was in my living room and had all the doors open…brewed it and then went outside for a few minutes and was really confused when I came back in because I knew I had forgotten to buy oranges but smelled them. The citrus notes are fantastic. :)

Yes, it’s unmistakably orange…what’s so amazing is how long the taste stays with you… Like I’m done drinking for a good 15 minutes now and the citrus is sill in my mouth.

Don’t let that stop you marzi, it’s just a very subjective note that someone else would not necessarily find. If you like citrus, chances are you would love this.

I wish I’d read the directions and recommendations a little better before I started to realize I would be drinking this tea all day. I probably would have done this at home where I have a smaller mug.

But I’m still loving every minute.

Each infusion has been different and delicious. I agree with the description. I think the fourth so far has been my favorite, although I really liked the third as well, and the fifth that I’m enjoying right now is also very nice. (Not to say that one and two weren’t good as well because they were.)

I wish I’d thought to keep notes as I was drinking this. I was surprised at how almost (but not quite) orange it was to start, and the floral notes I found, and the kind of honey it had, before it finished tangy metallic-ish.

I’m really enjoying it.

I wish I’d taken notes.

I’m at work and doing so many things today that this tea has kept me company all day, through so many different things, as each huge mug has enveloped and comforted me.

Looking at the dry leaves before I started, I wasn’t expecting this to be as light as it is, but it’s pretty light.

I’ve been following the brewing directions as I found them on the website for each different infusion. I’m on 5 right now, and I think I’m going to save the leaves to have a couple more tomorrow.

Brenden, I’m sorry I didn’t do this tea justice with my tasting note. It’s really spectacular.

It took me a really long time to figure out how to brew dancong oolongs. I spent about a year working on the best technique for worry-free brewing. I really didn’t enjoy them until I figured that out :)
