From Whispering Pines Tea Company

Quick Sips: Rich dark chocolaty goodness with vanilla and a hint of a tart cherry note makes this our top selling tea. Blended in 1 and 2oz batches 100% by hand with Madagascar vanilla and Yunnan black tea!

THE INSPIRATION
Golden Orchid — the legendary vanilla black tea that put Whispering Pines on the map!

Pure decadence, this black tea blend is packed full of deep creamy cocoa and sweet vanilla notes! My goal for this tea was to bring the ice cream shop on Mackinac Island into your cup! I began with North Winds – our black tea with dessert notes inspired by the island’s famous fudge and the rustic feel of Up North. The next step was to seek out the highest quality vanilla beans in the world and blend them into the base tea. Blended with a careful hand and the utmost respect for letting all of the flavors shine, this tea exceeds all expectations!

Golden Orchid carries a rich and smooth body with a perfectly balanced flavor profile. Unlike many other vanilla black teas, our base tea shines through the vanilla, creating a mouthwatering synthesis of bold and smooth dessert notes. While the vanilla is noticible by the trained palette, it does more than just add the depth of vanilla notes. Our premium grade A bourbon vanilla beans sourced from the island of Madagascar accentuate the deep fudge and cocoa notes of the base tea as well as add a thick creamy aspect to the blend, reminiscent of masterfully-crafted dark chocolate. The fruity notes of the tea are ever present, too, with light notes of plum and a mouthwatering layer of dark-chocolate covered Michigan cherries! This tea extends far past the last drop, with a powdery cocoa mouthfeel, a touch of sea salt and sweet vanilla lingering on the tongue for hours.

Over time, the tea will absorb the vanilla notes and smooth out. We recommend drinking this tea once or twice a week to taste the way it transforms over time. Also note that mixing up the tea prior to scooping out your desired amount of leaf is recommended due to the tendency of the vanilla beans to sink to the bottom of the bag. Enjoy!

Please note: Each harvest season produces a slightly different flavor profile of the base teas, and I spend a lot of time balancing out the flavor profile of North Winds to best suit Golden Orchid. Golden Orchid will have slight variations between harvests, but will always stay true to the inspiration!

Ingredients: Black Tea & hand-cut Madagascar vanilla beans

How to brew the perfect cup:
Steep 1/2 tablespoon of leaves
in 8 ounces of boiling water
for 3 minutes.

2nd infusion: 5 minutes
3rd infusion: 8 minutes

Sounds like my tea twin VariaTEA had a cup of this one too this evening; it’s been a while since we both made the same tea during the same day I do believe. Although, I do have to thank 221Tea because she was the lovely human being who provided me with a sample of this one!

Mostly, I think my thoughts on this echo VariaTEA’s; a little malt, a little bread, a little cream, a little chocolate and a whole heaping bundle of vanilla! Gotta add in too that I thought this one improved the cooler it got; it was somehow smoother and richer at a lower temperature.

Overall I thought this was good, dare I say it very good. Would I order it? Maybe. But I don’t know if I’d need to get it in any sort of quantity. More than likely I’ll just occasionally swap other Steepster members who are obsessed with this one for cup or two sized samples of it. I feel like that would be enough to keep me happy.

Terri HarpLady

I just ordered some of this & some samples in a tea ordering frenzy a couple of nights ago :)

JustJames

i love this one…. vanilla chocolate ice ream to me =0)

VariaTEA

Oh Roswell Strange…I have missed the days when we were so in sync with our tea drinking :P

Nightshifter

Vanilla? Malt? Cream? Chocolate? I’m so in!

MzPriss

@Nightshifter – you want some of it

Sad Sipdown (made even sadder because this was removed from my cupboard so my number doesn’t change).

Anyways, I decided to splurge since tomorrow I am starting a clean eating challenge and that means no tea. So, for my last day of tea (for the next two weeks), I decided it was finally time to break out the last of this amazing sample courtesy of Cavocorax. This tea is creamy, bright, fresh and delicious and I am sad to see it go.

OMGsrsly

No TEA?! That sounds horrible. ;) Good luck with your challenge.

Roswell Strange

D: No tea at all? Not even herbals? Tea twin you’re crazy.

TeaLady441

Good luck!!!
And that’s a good tea to go out on!

VariaTEA

Thank you. So far so good though I miss my teas. I am wondering if maybe I can drink caffeine free since the reason it says no tea is the caffeine (though it does allow for three cups of green tea)

OMGsrsly

I think as long as you avoid overly sugared drinks it should be fine. :) I’ve actually stolen a couple recipes from that to use in my daily life. The overnight oatmeal microwaves up perfectly in the morning with no cooking required! Just 50 seconds and it’s warm.

VariaTEA

I had the overnight oatmeal today. I liked it though I think in the future if I made it on my own, I would use the vanilla almond milk as opposed to the unsweetened. Also, the plan is meant to be a cleanse but I am just following it to get back into the habit of healthy eating and to pick up some new recipes so I am thinking that tea isn’t such a big deal.

OMGsrsly

I don’t like yogurt in it, so I used a bit of ahem cream. That might be why it was so tasty. I made more for tomorrow, using dried currants. I need to get back into eating breakfast, but I know that camping is going to be full of weird and unhealthy foods. (Toasted marshmallows FTW!)

It’s one of those super rare indulgent lazy Sundays today in my house! 11am and the hubby is still fast asleep and I’m still in bed, in my pjs, reading a book and drinking tea…. A relaxing, super enjoyable morning calls for an amazing favorite tea and without even needing to think I pulled GO out of my cupboard! I’m almost at the end of this bag and so my cup is full of those little black specs that I love so much but are bittersweet because it means I’m back to waiting again for the next release of this blend. One of my absolute favorite teas of all time!!

This is only the second time I’ve had this tea since I bought an ounce. Why have I done this to myself?? I guess it’s just so good that it feels special and not like an every day tea. But I jumped on the golden orchid wagon this morning and brewed some up before breakfast/lunch/whatever.

It’s even better than I remembered. That’s the mark of an excellent tea! It’s rich, and fudgy, and just dreamy…sigh. One of the best things about this tea is that you still taste great tea and somehow simultaneously taste the rich vanilla and chocolate. It’s such a winning, no wonder it’s the number one tea on Steepster :)

TheTeaFairy

I also woke up with a giant mug of GO! So GOod!!

mj

You and MzPriss were who inspired me! I see what you did there heh

MzPriss

It actually does get better as it ages a little. The vanilla loves on the tea more and it’s magic!

mj

More vanilla love is definitely a good thing :)

TheTeaFairy

I agree missy, ever since you told me about the aging, I’ve noticed!!!

MzPriss

I keep all of my bags separate (unless they were blended at the same time) so I can taste the differences. I take my GO seriously!

SarsyPie

Hardcore, fo sho’

TeaLady441

Ooooooh, maybe today is a Golden Orchid day for me as well! (I tend to hoard it too)

mj

Yes! GO sunday :)

Thanks to Mz P. for sending some of this my way!

I can see why people like this tea… it smells very chocolate-y in the bag and when you steep it up it’s so nice and rich. It definitely tastes like chocolate too! Is it a flavored tea or is it natural? I see it has vanilla in it which would explain the almost creamy quality it has. Anyway I’m glad I got to try this one! It’s good with soymilk and it’s also good plain.

I’m sure everyone enjoyed the break from my avalanche of tasting notes while I had the Butiki traveling teabox. haha. This was certainly the first tea I wanted to try once the teabox was traveling again. MzPriss sent me a few things even though I’m eagerly awaiting her teabox that seems like it only has the best teas!

THIS tea is the highest rated on Steepster and well deserved. It’s better than I expected, and I expected greatness. I haven’t given a tea a 99 rating in a while. I used 2 1/2 teaspoons. I was able to get three really nice steeps by waiting for the first cup after boiling a few minutes, the second a couple minutes, the third just boiled. This is exactly my sort of tea. Just look at those flavor notes. I had to check the ingredients list to make sure there actually wasn’t chocolate of any kind. There isn’t. I realize that this is a Yunnan Dian Hong blended with a Fujian, but this is the kind of flavor I look for whenever I try Verdant’s Laoshan. I’ve only tried steeping one teaspoon of the Laoshan though – maybe I should try 2 1/2 teaspoons at least once. This actually tastes like melted chocolate though. With some crunchy vanilla beans. I can see how WP compares this to cherry, but I wished there would have been more of that flavor. The third steep was still very good, but it seemed more like sweet potato than chocolate. Absolutely none of that cedary oversteeped flavor. This blend is absolutely amazing and I would love to try everything that WP ever blends!

Cameron B.

My sample recommended half a tablespoon, which would be 1.5 teaspoons… Their website says the same thing. Maybe yours was written in error?

tea-sipper

OH I must have read it wrong! I’ll change it in the tasting notes so no one tries steeping that many teaspoons. It was really good at 2 1/2 though. :D

Cameron B.

Yeah I bet it was! :D I’m an overleafer generally.

TheTeaFairy

I also use close to a tbsp per cup! I just can’t get enough of that taste…

MzPriss

:D I overleaf as well. I’m glad you loved it so much. It’s hard not to love. And it just keeps getting better. The vanilla keeps infusing the leaf and it gets yummier and yummier and smoother and smoother. It’s the middle of the night (sigh) but I think I need to have some of this right now.

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Hehehehe :D I will not be held responsible for you guys getting zero sleep!

MzPriss

It’s not your fault Brenden. We just don’t sleep. So when we are not sleeping already in the middle of the night – we have to be really picky about middle of the night tea. Sadly middle of the night came extra early last night :( but I have ALL the good tea so :)

TheTeaFairy

Oh no, sorry you had another bad night MzPriss….mine wasn’t very successful either so I finished my book and drank tea, the perks of sleepless nights :-)

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Oh, insomnia…no good. Have either of you tried Kava Kava?

MzPriss

Awww sorry Fairy :( I SHOULD have finished my book. I got up and cooked.

@Brenden – I use valerian sometimes. Aren’t there some liver issues with kava?

TheTeaFairy

Thanks, but my insomnia is related to stuff that plants can’t do anything about unfortunately….but I’m working at it, some day I will get my beauty rest :-)

tea-sipper

I shouldn’t have been posting tasting notes on this one in the middle of the night! It could certainly replace a chocolate dessert though. I’m sorry you guys aren’t sleeping. :/

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Hmm, haven’t heard of liver issues, but possibly! Luckily I don’t generally have trouble sleeping since I started cutting out caffeine at 9pm. :) haha

MzPriss

@TeaFairy – we shall overcome and we will sleep :)

mj

I wish I could share my sleeping ability with you two :-(. I am a champion sleeper. I fall asleep pretty much instantly and left to my own devices, I’ll usually sleep about ten hours a night. But I also don’t drink caffeine after about 6 and that helps a lot.

MzPriss

I’m so jealous…

For some reason I was really really craving a chocolate tea today. Don’t even know why, but I really was. This one totally hit the spot!
It’s not often that I crave chocolate-y teas, which is why I don’t have tons of them in my collection. I honestly kinda just feel the need to have this chocolate-y tea in my collection and no other one. Plus! This one doesn’t taste like wood! Keep thinking that maybe it will start tasting like wood randomly since apparently my taste buds love ruining everything, but they’ve not betrayed GO yet, so that’s good! XD

This is the second sample I ordered from Whispering Pines. After seeing how popular and well-liked it is around these parts, I thought I’d see what all the fuss is about. The dry leaf is a mixture of black and golden leaves. I know there’s vanilla bean in here but I think it’s camouflaged among the black leaves. It smells just like hot chocolate mix to me! Very creamy milk chocolate with vanilla sweetness akin to marshmallows. Oh, and I steeped 1.5 tsp for 3 minutes.

The brewed tea smells delicious! Like deep, sultry vanilla mixed with dark cocoa and notes of caramel sweetness. I can see why everyone loves this tea! There is a very present cocoa taste that hits me first when I take a sip. The vanilla is there but more subdued than I expected (I read in a recent note that the presence of chocolate can cause us to not notice vanilla as much, maybe this is the case). I also taste warm freshly baked bread (maybe a sweet, rich bread like brioche or challah). I never really knew what “malty” meant in tea descriptions, but I think I can taste it in this tea, especially in the aftertaste – sort of a rich almost sourness but in a pleasant way, like yeast dough or dark beer. I would describe it as foamy. :P I drank the second half of this cup with a wee bit of sugar and I thought it helped the vanilla immensely (sorry all you purists). I’m not really sure I’m qualified to rate this tea but it was super delicious, so too bad! Aww, it’s all gone…

if you want mustard in your tea and it makes you smile to have it that way, have it that way!! :) Ain’t no wrong or right when it comes to tea…there’s just tradition and non-tradition. I was reading this morning that the Quakers took their tea with butter and salt!!! Maybe it’s good… :)

Memily

MUSTARD!?

donkeyteaarrrraugh

Memily, it was just an example. :) Although if someone liked it, why not?

Memily

Haha I wrote that comment very late at night and was clearly scandalised by the suggestion.

Tommy Toadman

We love this tea, malty in tea to me can be much like a dark porter beer :)
great review!

Cameron B.

Thanks Tommy. I think I’ll try their North Winds blend next since it’s the same thing without the vanilla bean. I didn’t get a ton of vanilla from this anyway.

donkeyteaarrrraugh

I really loved their North Winds. It was a straightforward and absolutely brilliant blend! I just ordered several ounces of it yesterday!

There is a very slight, subtle smokiness here. It’s extremely subtle, more like a campfire from a distance. There is a light richness to this cup otherwise, some maltiness, and a hint of vanilla. It’s really a well done tea, but not for me.

Sil

doh. sorry to hear :(

ohfancythat

More for me ;)

Sil

i enjoyed golden orchid but not in the way that everyone else seems to be.

Courtney

I was expecting way more vanilla Sil. It was so similar to North Winds, I was expecting a completely different tea to be honest.

Sil

i liked this one better, but also expected more out of both of them.
