Our Tan Yang Gong Fu comes from the origin of Tan Yang Gong Fu tea: Fu’an, Fujian. The quality of this tea is Superfine, the best level of Tan Yang Gong Fu. The leaf is covered with distinct golden pekoe. Aroma is full and strong while without any foreign flavor. The liquid is bright and red, with plenty tastes and obvious sweet potato fragrance. It has sweet aftertaste and strong effect of secreting saliva.
Grown in Fu’an (福安), Fujian, China

Being the first one among Fujian’s three best Gong Fu Black Teas (Bai Lin Gong Fu, Zheng He Gong Fu, Tan Yang Gong Fu), Tan Yang Gong Fu Black Tea has tight and thin leaves, looks glossy, which could be seen from TeaVivre’s product photo. When looking at this tea, the golden pekoe is particularly eye-catching, strongly connected to its high quality. Under the effect of photosynthesis, fresh buds contain the largest amount of beneficial substances than other parts. Moreover, the traditional making method of black tea has retained the nutrition in the most volume.

Thanks for this one in your sale, Ost! I’m happy I’m able to try it because it doesn’t look like it’s available anymore. I’m a little sad about that. I think I can guess why. The long, dark, wiry leaves have a much different flavor than Teavivre’s much beloved other Tan Yang: the Superfine. Fans of the Superfine might have thought this one would be more like that one. While those leaves were mostly golden and tasted like sweet potato and honey, this one is very much like tangy plums. The light amber brew is just pure tangy plums and I love it. It is almost identical to the Yunnan Dian Hong Ancient Tree that Teavivre sells and I absolutely love. It’s a pity I didn’t know about the similarities sooner, as I would have stocked up on this one. Maybe Teavivre will sell this again some day. I will be waiting! (I asked Teavivre and they replied that they were waiting to find quality Tan Yang again, so there is hope this will be available again.)

Finally getting around to try this one, which I chose as my free sample with my TeaVivre Black Friday order. Oddly enough, this doesn’t seem to be on the website anymore, and I know for a fact that it was a new tea when I ordered it. I wonder what happened there. Anyway, the leaves are very thin and wiry, and they have a very dark chocolate brown color. Dry scent is a yummy combination of chocolate, honey, hay, and perhaps a touch of rich dried fruits.
The fruit aroma has become much stronger in the steeped tea, and there’s also a strong, sweet honey scent. That sweet honey is also present in the tea itself, which makes me happy since honey is one of my favorite notes in tea. There’s also a thick bready flavor and texture that works well with the honey, as well as plenty of sweet potato. I can taste a slight amount of molasses along with rich and syrupy dried fruits such as prune or raisin. The only thing I wish there was more of is the cocoa, which is present near the end of the sip in a very unsweetened manner. Super tasty and satisfying, and of course, perfectly smooth!

In case anyone is curious, I sent them an email asking about this tea. Mary replied and told me that they sold out of this batch and they weren’t satisfied with the next batch, so they’re still looking for more of it. :) Love their customer service!

The flavor didn’t exactly betray me-but I was definitely not expecting it to get super earthy. It still tasted strongly of sweet potatoes, but the earthiness appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. And i really don’t like teas that are this earthy D:
Disappointed with this one. :( If the earthiness had toned down this would be a great cuppa for me! Perhaps next time I will try steeping it shorter. That might help some. :S
