As warm and toasty as sitting in front of your fireplace, so is this tea… but, with a bit of spice! We have taken a delicious Chinese black tea and blended it with the most amazing vanilla, ginger and spices. The flavor reminds of a chai tea with the warm creaminess of vanilla. An absolute treat!

The weather of the Midwest never ceases to amaze me, yesterday and today has been unseasonably warm with a high in the 60s. Even though I am stuck in bed I can have the windows open and enjoy the fresh air. Tomorrow however, it is supposed to drop down into the colds again, when I checked yesterday they were predicting snow but now the weather reports sun. I miss the reliability of East Coast weather.
Today’s tea is Fireside Spice by Della Terra Teas is a wonderfully spiced seasonal tea, that I am reviewing past its season again. I seem to be notorious for logging the tasting notes in my journal and by the time I get around to reviewing it on my blog, the season has passed. This tea is a blend of Chinese Black Tea, Vanilla flavor and Vanilla bits, Ginger bits, Chai Spices, and White Cornflowers. The aroma is powerful, a real kick of spices and sweetness. It reminds me of a heavily spiced snickerdoodle cookie with citrus pomander undertones. The aroma is deliciously sweet and tantalizing.
Once brewed the leaves take on a malty tone, it is still cookie sweet with notes of vanilla, spices, and caramelized sugar. There is still a very faint aroma of oranges as an afterthought. The liquid has such a sweet aroma, the vanilla and spice notes really make it feel like I am sniffing a freshly baked cookie.
The taste is spicy and rich, the notes of vanilla blend with the spices for a sugary sweet treat. I know I keep going on about cookies, but I really feel it is the best description. The tea tastes like warm, freshly baked, snickerdoodles but with extra spice. The cloves and cinnamon give a tingly mouthfeel that fades to a smooth mouthfeel. I prefer this tea with cream and sugar, the additives really cause the vanilla to take center stage and mellows out the spices just a bit. It is a perfect tea for a cold or dreary day, when you need a warm and sweet pick-me-up.

My first order from Della Terra came! It’s taking all of my restraint not to try them all consecutively. But I overslept big time today so I figured getting all hopped up on caffeine so late in the day would not be a wise idea. So I chose this to accompany my breakfast-for-dinner. This is a nice chai blend with just the right amount of spice that it’s very present without being overwhelming. I just added milk and because of the vanilla bits it was sweet enough as is without adding anything else. My only complaint is that the sweetness was a little artificial tasting; I probably could have done without it and just added my own honey as I usually do with chais, but overall it was a nice winter-warmer-upper.

Good but I think I left it to steep for to long so there’s a bit of a bitter aftertaste that just doesn’t work :/ I think I’m going to let this cool for a bit then down it all in one go just to avoid the bitterness
Shorter steeping time, this time around. The Big Red gum association is still there but a little less edgy, since I can taste the vanilla more this time around.
This is one of the sweeter spiced black teas I’ve tried. I added very little sugar, but it’s still sweet. Not cloyingly so, but I would add any sweetener to this tea with a light hand. The taste begins with the chai spices and fades to vanilla.
I can smell the cinnamon, but I can’t taste it or much of anything besides black tea, although there is a hint of sweetness and vanilla at the end. I will try a longer steep time next.
Mmm, this was nice. Exactly what was needed when the heating in our office broke! Just shut my eyes, take a sip, and I’m sat by an open fire in a log cabin that’s surrounded by snow.
It’s does smell spicey! Quite sweet thanks to the vanilla, but the ginger and the chai spices really come through.
It’s nicely reflected in the taste. At the start you get a warming sensation on your tongue, and it’s a definite winter spice mix. This is followed by the vanilla coming through and the everything blends in to a natural of sweetness and spice (and all things nice!)
This is a nice spice tea. It’s a pretty average mixture but the vanilla makes it feel a little richer than it would otherwise. It’s nice and sweet without being too much, and none of the spices overpowers the sip. I have enough of this for about one more cup and then it’ll be a sipdown, and I’m not sure I’ll restock, but I’m glad I got to try it because this is a solid spice option.
