From 52teas

When it came time to do this year’s poll, only 2 Oolong teas from our archives were requested as reblends, which didn’t offer enough diversity for my liking – so rather than reblend one of the 2 Oolong teas on the poll, I decided to create a new Oolong tea this year.

This tea was inspired by one of my customers who is also a frequent poster on Steepster, who – in one of her posts – mentioned that she’d like to see a fig tea from me. So here it is (and it won’t be the last, fig is one of my favorite fruits, I just haven’t gotten around with experimenting with fig in tea yet . . . but now that I have, I think I’ll keep it up because – YUM!)

So I started with these three ideas in mind: Holiday tea, Oolong tea & Fig tea. I crafted a blend of Oolongs – Ruanzhi, Wuyi and Qingxin cultivars – which I chose because I wanted the Oolong to be a little more fruity and a little less floral. To this lovely Oolong blend, I added some figs. For the holiday element, I added some cinnamon. For the final touch, I added a little honey essence.

Really lovely – this tea. The oolong is smooth and sweet. It has pleasing notes of fruit with just a hint of floral. The fig is well-defined and the honey compliments the fig nicely. The cinnamon is warm and inviting without overwhelming the cup. As I say: really lovely! It’s also organic, VEGAN, gluten free & allergen free!

organic ingredients: oolong teas, figs, cinnamon & natural flavors

7th Day of Christmas Teas

Full disclaimer: I’m not a big fan of figs (they make me wish I was eating dates instead). I’m also not in love with wuyi or “red” oolongs, although I do appreciate them in small amounts.

With that out of the way, I think this blend is unique and fun. I don’t think I’ve ever had a fig flavoured tea before and 52teas does a beautiful job of capturing that flavour (which I have not yet learned to love). It’s an interesting pairing with this oolong blend, which brings out the stonefruit, floral, and honey-like qualities in a fig. There’s a bit of roasted malt note, along with the added cinnamon, which I don’t pick up on as much.

Flavors: Cinnamon, Fig, Floral, Honey, Malt, Roasted, Stonefruit

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 224)

There’s a nice aftertaste to this one, of spice and oolong, but I’m not particularly taken by the aroma and initial sip. It does taste a bit figgy (I’ve recently eaten figs and feel like I can say this confidently), but that said, I also don’t know that I’m a big fan of fig in tea, generally.

I absolutely love fresh figs but can never find them!

Courtney

They come out around the summer here, but the season is really short — we try to get as many as possible for the short time they’re around!

Kittenna

I sadly only had dried figs! I’m not sure if I’ve ever had one fresh.

7th tea of Christmas

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this, I don’t know what sticky fig is….but I do know that I love fig. first thought was like, a sticky rice? but it’s definitely not that. there’s some cinnamon? some kind of spices, and a kind of…caramel-y fig? I’m into it.

52Teas

LOL – sticky fig = a slightly honeyed, cinnamon oolong tea into which I cut up some very sticky, dried figs.

tea-sipper

WHAT fig tea?! On to the wish list this goes. I think I might be the person in the description who mentioned Anne making fig teas?! Awesome. Also, it’s good to know this won’t be the last fig experiment that Anne also mentions in the description…

52Teas

Yep – @tea-sipper, I do believe it was you that had mentioned that I should do a fig tea. I had planned on doing fig teas at some point in the future, but it was your mention that prompted me to do it a little sooner than that. :)

annie

@Anne – hahahaha, I thought it was some weird dessert or something. that is the best description, thank you. and yes, more fig teas pleeeaase!

tea-sipper

Oh good, I’m glad we will have fig teas sooner then. :D
