“Mmm deliciously malty, with raisin and stonefruit notes. Very smooth. I often forget how delicious Assams can be. Like Darjeelings, I think I started off my tea journey with a lot of Assams that...” Read full tasting note

Description

Black tea crafting in Taiwan was initiated by the Japanese in 1903. In 1926, the first Assam cultivar was introduced and planted around the hills of Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County. This lake’s climate, environment, and terroir was deemed the most similar to theAssam tea gardens of India. Today, Sun Moon Lake produces the bulk of Taiwan’s black tea between three distinct cultivars: a pure-stock Assam, a native indigenous cultivar, and a hybrid cultivar named #8.

Our Assam ‘Black beauty’ #8 is organically farmed in Yuchih, a renowned tea-growing village on the edges of the beautiful Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan.
The leaves of Assam “Black Beauty” #8 are picked in May time, during the early morning, and then wilted naturally before being rolled and bruised, and left to oxidise for a day on carefully supervised covered bamboo trays before roasting and drying.

Assam Black Beauty #8 is a distinctive and highly appealing tea, with a sweet smooth richness of taste that is unsurpassed. Hints of cream, honey and bourbon add complexity to a tea that is rich in character and deliciously deep.
