Thanks to the plantation that’s located in the deep mountain environment with opulent sunshine exposure, our GABA tea material comes the 100% Jin Xuan varietal from Alishan area with a incomparable quality.

The material is the same as our Jade Oolong GABA from Alishan, but this one was wilted and processed into Black tea. The result creates a thick, sweet and rich body with a orange-red tea soup. It’s the perfect tea for those who enjoy black tea but are seeking a soothing effect to counter the strong black tea caffeine kick.

GABA stands for Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, and the content of this tea is aournd 400 mg per 100 grams which is higher than most of the GABA tea in the market. The GABA content adds a thick layer of baked sweet potato taste to the tea and is proven to offer the drinker a soothing or relaxing feeling. GABA processing, which involves shade growing 10 to 15 days before harvesting and then nitrogen sparging was developed by the Japanese and later perfected by the Taiwanese. The result is a tea that tastes great, at once stimulating and soothing to the nervous system.

I would describe this tea as light in many respects – the body, colour, smell and taste. The mouthfeel is kind of sticky with little astringency. Aromas of the tea are in the vicinity of sweet potato, honey, cake and a general fruitiness. The taste is very sweet and a bit tart with a floral finish and an almond note. It’s not the most exciting tea, but a decent one as far as GABA black teas go.

Really bright and clear GABA tea. Definitely strong in its consistent sweet and rich black tea taste. The relaxing GABA sensation is apparent as well.

This is one tasty black tea. It is slightly malty, just slightly. Another reviewer said it tasted like molasses, this is a fairly good description of the sweet note to this tea. There is very little bitterness and very little astringency to this tea. It just tastes good to me. Not really feeling the effects of the GABA though, perhaps when I am done with my last cup?

I steeped this eight times in a 120ml gaiwan with 7g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec. I think it would have gone a couple of more steeps if I hadn’t reached my caffeine limit for the day and then some.

My morning tea for travel, and a tea that I needed for the moment. I used a small teaspoon in my 12 ounce cup again and it actually is way better western. So based on the economy of the leaf and how complex and sweet it is light, I’m rating it higher. Most of the same notes with Molasses leading, but then there’s a little bit of a cocoa thing going on with the sweet potato. And it is so, so balanced and sweet. So, I recommend this one brewed lighter, western or grandpa.
