As we turn the corner into November, it’s hard not to think about the fact that Turkey Day is coming! Just the fact that it is November is enough to start my mouth watering over visions of cranberries, stuffing, turkey and PIE!
One of my favorite southern recipes in the pie category is the pumpkin pecan pie. Because pumpkin pie or pecan pie is entirely too difficult a decision to make, the pumpkin pecan pie offers the best of both scrumptious worlds!
So, in honor of the pumpkin pecan pie, we’ve created a pumpkin pecan pie black tea, our tea of the week for this week, with real pecans, cinnamon stick bits and natural flavors. I find it so rewarding when you finish tea. I purchased a bag of this and was given another bag from a friend (thanks Madison!!) so though not officially gone, I completed another sample of tea and can make more room (for more tea).
This one I infused hot, five minutes, with three rocks of the German Rock Sugar, and the smallest splash of half and half. This tea without any additives is a little bit bitter, has a natural unsweetened pumpkin taste, a bite of cinnamon, a hint of nuttiness and the black tea flavor. I like natural pumpkin, so I am not put-off by the bitterness, but I do really think the sugar helps to round it out and meld better with the cinnamon. The sugar makes the pumpkin taste sweeter and not be so forceful and actually helps to add to the nuttiness so that it is a little more pronounced and not so hidden. The half and half is really just a bonus for me, pumpkin pie should always be served with whipped cream, and this is the best way for me to get that in the tea :)
As a final note, this tea is still one of my favorites by 52teas, it is right up there with the Coconut Cream Pie, and now that I finished up a sample, I can open up my Peanut Butter Chai!
There are two equal flavors in this tea and they blend very well together so you don’t have to worry about flavor war in your mouth which is greatly appreciated. One is the pumpkin which is light and sweet when you put it next to the pecan. Here the pecan is very dark, taking on a heavily toasted nut flavor, and it forms the back bone of the flavor along with the after taste.
Apparently there are two different kinds of pecan pies. One is the sweet molasses with pecan to mellow out the flavor and I like this kind best. The other is dark and nutty with only a little sweetness to brighten the pie up a little bit. This tea tastes like the darker toasted nut kind of pie. I wish it was a little bit more like the molasses kind of pie but, it is good the way it is. And my wanting it to be like the sweeter kind of pie is really just a matter of preference.
Bottom line this tea is delicious and the pecan flavor is present which make the difference between this and the similar pumpkin pie tea very apparent. I like it.
I agree with that. It’s a strange feeling, really, because even when you run out of something awesome you can’t get again there’s still a really nice aspect to having finished the tin.
Yea, bittersweet is probably my preferred term for it
